Venus presents a rare show to stargazers

Video: Stargazers and astronomers have been observing the planet Venus crossing between the Earth and the Sun

As anticipated, the stargazers in several regions of the Earth had once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view the rare celestial phenomenon of Venus moving across the face of the Sun. The event is also so important for scientists — especially astronomers — that the next time Venus makes a similar transit will be only after 105 years.

The planet touched the edge of the Sun’s disc at 22:09 GMT on Tuesday and left the disc at 04:49 GMT. The next transit will be seen only on 11th December 2117, when possibly and unfortunately, none of the people who observed the event now may live long enough to witness it.

The Venus transits take place in pairs of events with a gap of approximately eight years because such transits occur only four times in 243 years (224.7 Earth days to be precise). After the invention of the telescope, such seven pairs of events took place in 1631 and 1639, 1761 and 1769, 1874 and 1882, the only and last such pair of this century being in 2004 and 2012.

Interestingly, the gap between the years of one occurrence of a pair and the other is 8 years. Hence, the next pair of Venus transits will take place in 2117 and 2125.

The present crossing of Venus across the sun is of great significance from the scientific point of view because earlier the scientific equipments and knowledge to study such events were rather crude or not as developed as in the present times.

The transit of Venus also gave a chance to scientists to conduct experiments to probe the possibility of the existence of Earth-like planets elsewhere in the Milky Way galaxy, and the existence of life elsewhere in other galaxies. They also can probe the Venusian atmosphere that is structurally and compositionally very complex.

About 96.5% of the gases in the atmosphere of Venus are carbon dioxide (CO2) and most of the rest is nitrogen with a very miniscule percentage of other gases. Sometimes the Venus atmosphere is covered with an opaque and dense layer of reflective clouds of Sulphuric Acid (H2SO4) because of which its surface is not clearly seen from the space in visible light.

Scientists have come to the conclusion that once the surface of Venus had oceans and water bodies but now its terrestrial structure is desert-like with very high temperatures soaring to about 460 °C.

The gases rising up on the atmosphere of Venus do not get into cyclic conversions such as carbon cycle, water cycle, etc. because they rise up and get mixed into the interplanetary space because Venus has no planetary magnetic field, and the free hydrogen in its atmosphere get swept into space by blazing solar winds.

This could be one of the possibilities of life not existing on Venus despite its several similarities to the Earth, despite the two planets having almost the same size, orbit, gravity, chemical composition, and at about the same distance from the Sun. For these similarities, it is often referred to as the Earth’s Sister Planet.

The planet Venus is named after Goddess Venus, the mythological Roman goddess of love and beauty, whose Greek equivalent is Aphrodite. This also indicates that the ancient Romans and Greeks too used to study Venus and associated it with life, love, intrigues and beauty of Goddess Venus.

Venus is the third brightest celestial body visible to humans after the Sun and the Moon, and hence it is one of the first planets of our solar system that attracted human observation. Venus is also known as the Morning Star or the Evening Star because it appears the brightest just before sunrise or just after sunset.

During its transit across the face of the sun the planet was visible as a small black circular dot and it took about six hours and thirty minutes to come out.

Among the most preferred Venus gazing sites were locations in Central America, the northern South America, southern North America, Canada, the Arctic region, Europe including the British Isles, the Middle East, eastern Africa, East Asia the western Pacific and Australia.

Hawaii in the United States turned out to be one of the best places to see the whole event with the Hawaii University’s Institute of Astronomy setting up telescope stations on the world famous Waikiki beach.

Some of the best photographs of the Venus event were provided by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a special observatory positioned at a distance of over 36,000 km above the Earth.

After the invention of the telescope at the beginning of the 17th century, Tuesday’s Venus transit is only the eighth and the only event so far with a spacecraft (SDO) near Venus when it occurred.

Windows 8 Will Have Only Four Versions

In a blog article on the Windows 8 Editions, Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc announced that the next edition of the operating system will come in four versions: Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, Windows RT, and Windows 8 Enterprise. That is, the new version will have fewer versions compared to Windows 7 that came in six versions.

The new version of Microsoft OS is expected to take away a lot of confusion for home users, who had three versions to choose from in Windows 7: Starter, Home Basic and Home Premium. That otherwise means, home users can simply opt for the basic version called Windows 8, unless the user has to use a more technically advanced version in which case the choice could be Windows 8 Pro.

Though, the name of the new version has been confirmed as Windows 8, it is neither announced when it will be released to the market, nor its price whenever it will be available to the consumers. The release of the new OS to the market may take a few months more, it seems.

The basic version Windows 8 is designed for home users who run a PC or a laptop. For technical and professional uses, there is the Windows 8 Pro offering a wider set of technologies such as encryption of file systems, domain management, virtualization, etc. The Windows RT version (aka Windows on ARM or WOA) is a new product that cannot be individually purchased but may come loaded with devices running ARM or preinstalled on tablets and other devices running on ARM processors and mobile apps. And the Windows 8 Enterprise is typically designed for large enterprises.

The new version of MS OS offers more flexibility and enhanced and better user-experience as it can be used with the conventional keyboard and mouse as well as with touch screens, and the user can switch between the two.

Steve Jobs unveils Apple iPad 2

Watch this video to know what is in store for those who are eagerly waiting for the release of Apple iPad 2.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004, though on medical leave since January 2011, presented the improved version of iPad and said, “We have been working on this product for a while and I just didn’t want to miss today.”

So, Jobs showed off the second generation of the iPad tablet computer on March 2, at an event in San Francisco. The new iPad which is scheduled for shipping on March 11 comes with two models in terms of color: the white iPad2, and the black iPad 2. Jobs said that Apple will be shipping out the white model on day one of starting shipping of the product.

Also, Jobs said the new version of iPad is 33% thinner than its predecessor, thinner than iPhone 4, and it weighs less than iPad 1. He said iPad 2 is also much faster as it is equipped with what he called the A5 processor, a new chip with a dual core processor. The machine is twice as faster on CPU performance and 9 times faster on graphics performance, Jobs said.

Also iPad 2 comes with two cameras to make video conferencing more convenient: a built-in rear camera and a front-facing camera. The other features included can be a video editing package iMovie and a music making program.

The all new design iPad 2 will be priced at the same old price of iPad 1, starting at $499 (£305). The gadget will have 10 hours battery life, and over one month standby, Steve Jobs said.

What Steve Jobs calls ‘the dramatically improved product’ will go on sale in the U.S. on 11 March, and later on 25 March it will be available in 26 other countries including the UK.

According to industry analysts, Apple iPads accounted for 95% of tablet computer sales until September 2010, but the sales declined to 75% by the end of 2010. The fall in sales is due to new tablet devices that are based on Android operating system, Google’s open-source product.

Microsoft Windows 7 and HP’s WebOS are the other platforms that are competing with Apple iPads. According to reports, a lot more products are expected to give tough competition to Apple’s tablet PC throughout 2011, as over 80 new devices have already appeared in the market.

This supercomputer is named Columbia Supercomputer in honor of the crew of the ill-fated Space Shuttle Columbia that disintegrated over Texas on February 1, 2003. The disaster resulted in the death of all the seven crew – Commander: Rick D. Husband, Pilot: William C. McCool, Payload Commander: Michael P. Anderson (also in charge of science mission), Payload Specialist: Ilan Ramon (an Israeli Air Force colonel, also the first Israeli astronaut), Mission Specialist: Kalpana Chawla (an India-born aerospace engineer on her second space mission), Mission Specialist: David M. Brown, and Mission Specialist: Laurel Clark.

The Columbia Supercomputer was specially built for NASA by Silicon Graphics. The main purpose for which it was built was to “esimulate the violent collision and merger of spiral galaxies that lead to the formation of elliptical galaxies”. The supercomputer is connected to the NASA Research and Engineering Network. In 2004 it was installed at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing facility at Ames Research Center (ARC) located at Moffett Field in California’s Silicon Valley.

Hello world!

Welcome to Tech-Sharing Blog! This is my first post after setting up my own self-hosted blog, if it can be called so. In the strict sense, a self-hosted blog is one that is hosted on one’s own server, apart from having its own domain name. But this is a blog hosted using hired shared hosting services.

Also, this cannot be said to be my first attempt to blog on WordPress platform, because about two years back, I opened a free account for a free blog with WordPresss.com but left it as it is, and spent my time on many other FREE blogging services, both learning about blogging and many other aspects associated with it. Mostly I used the services of Blogger, the easiest FREE blogging service, provided by Google, where I have some blogs already running. Though I thought of migrating to my own WordPress blog with my work already in my Blogger blogs, after thinking over some other future prospects, I left them to run there for some more time, or forever, I do not know right now.

This blog is setup with a one-click setup process from the control panel of my hosting service provider. After I decided to setup my own WordPress blog, I searched around to understand the best way to set this up, but the more I read about professional blog setup services, I got into more confusion with some of them describing it as a tough job that takes a lot of time and effort. I was inclined to hire professional help, as I am short of time. So, I contacted some professional services too. But, I am yet to receive even a quote, maybe, because those pros could be overburdened with work. So, I got impatient and took a plunge, buying a domain and hosting facility, followed by this one-click WordPress installation. I hope to customize this blog soon, or, maybe I may hire someone for the job.

So, welcome back, and see the changes, and if you too are a beginner, or an experienced blogger trying WordPress for the first time, my experiments with this wonderful blogging software may help you.

I also look forward to receiving guidance and suggestions from experienced WP professionals. Also, I want to exchange many things with fellow bloggers including marketing and business ideas, apart from technology.
